Reflexology. What is it? Reflexology is the application of pressure to areas on the feet, hands and ears. It is an Eastern practice that stems from the belief that if pressure is applied to certain areas of the ears, hands and feet, other parts of the body get stimulated or are connected. Big toe = brains, middle of foot = solar plexus. Not sure who decided how these correlate, but I am sure he was much more clever than I.
Recently, it seems that in most major cities I know, have little places that specialize in foot reflexology are popping up everywhere. It seems like an awkward thing to have as a business really, but I suppose so is a place that gives pedicures.
These places are often tucked away in a plaza. Kind of hard to find initially. They do little advertising, which makes you almost feel like " is this naughty?" However, when you do find your little place in your city you will be in for quite a treat.
If you are a person who is not ticklish, or have a thing about strangers in touching them you might enjoy this. When you arrive, the place is dark, quiet, and smells of something exotic. You are ushered into a section, where there is a big leather chair that awaits you. You sit, and a person comes in and you soak your feet in a tub they provide. After the soak, they put your feet up on a footstool.
Prior to the foot rub, they will rub your shoulders and neck( the best). They also give you your own soft blanky, so you can recline and tune out, all cozied up while they pamper you.
Once you settle in after the shoulder/neck rub, this person will rub, press, prod and manipulate your feet for a whole HOUR.....(yes, you read that right)
I do not have to talk to them, I do not have to engage. They kind of discourage talking in general. I just have to sit and be taken care of. At the end of the session, hot stones are applied to my feet, as if the hour of reflexology was not enough.
I thought this must cost a fortune. Not even close, I pay 3 dollars extra for moisturizer on my feet, plus the reflexology, my total is 31.00 dollars.
Reported benefits, besides just getting your feet rubbed. Now I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on the interweb. I would suggest taking everything with a grain of salt in this world.
Foot reflexology massage can also reportedly help treat symptoms of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), kidney stones, constipation, backaches and restless leg syndrome. The therapy can also improve memory, manage diabetic neuropathy and ease symptoms of menopause and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
So, for the very purpose of getting a foot rub, I would recommend this. If nothing else happens, you still leave relaxed, and happy. Self care is so important, and this is just another piece of the every growing puzzle.
